Hangzhou - a fascinating city
Hangzhou has a history of 2227 years, and was once the capital of the ancient China. It is a beautiful and
fascinating garden city, located in the central part of the Yangtze River Delta in the east of China.
It is a perfect combination of history, culture and modern life. What is more fascinating about Hangzhou is
that its fast economic development is like the surging tides in the Qiantang River, with new waves
exceeding the old ones. The Yangtze River Delta, covering 100,000 square kilometers in all (1.2% of total
area of China), has a population of 76,080,000 (5.89% of the total population in China).
In 2004, the total GDP of the Yangtze River Delta has reached 21.1% of the whole GDP of China. The GDP
per capita in the Yangtze River Delta has exceeded US$ 4000. The Yangtze River Delta has generated
25% of the government income in China, and more than 33% of the total export amount in China. If the
success of China's reform and opening-up policy is considered as a miracle of the mankind, the Yangtze
River Delta is the cradle of this miracle.
Hangzhou is famous not only for its natural beauty, but also for its tradition, history and culture. The old
tradition in Hangzhou ¡°Geng Du Chuan Jia¡± (emphasizing diligent studying and hard working through
generations) demonstrates the diligence and civilization of the residents in Hangzhou. As personal
income increases, studying abroad is becoming popular and common. Every year tens of thousands of
students go to almost every part of the world, and the number of students studying abroad is increasing
dramatically during recent years.
The hospitality of the Hangzhou residents adds charisma to this city. Friends of education field from all
over the world are welcomed!
